This classic custom 4×4 project is our benchmark build for Gobi and desert crossing completed years ago. Many off-road enthusiasts still reference this build concept.
The owner’s goal was clear: solo long expedition across Gobi and desert. The rig needs strong underbody protection, enough fuel range and reliable rescue capacity, with top priority on stability.

Build Trade-offs
Considering desert driving characteristics, we avoided excessive body lift.
– Suspension upgrade for long travel rebound to adapt undulating desert terrain
– Full set of underbody skid plates against rock impact in Gobi
– Large-capacity auxiliary fuel tank to extend driving range and reduce fuel anxiety in remote wilderness
– Fixed mounting plan for basic recovery gear, reasonable load arrangement to prevent heavy rear weight
– Isolated circuit design. Modified wiring separated from factory system to protect original ECU as much as possible
Project Summary
The rig passed multiple long-distance real tests and performed steadily on desert and Gobi trails.
This case proves that desert overland modification focuses on fuel range, chassis protection and weight balance. Cosmetic-only upgrades will bring hidden risks during long expeditions.
We still refer to the weight balance and wiring experience from this project when designing desert custom builds today.
