This is our benchmark custom rock crawling project completed years ago. Many hardcore off-road enthusiasts still refer to this build idea today.
The owner’s goal was clear: tackle extreme terrain such as rocks and steep slopes. High requirements for chassis strength, vehicle weight balance and locker reliability.

Build Trade-offs
Top-heavy setup is dangerous on rocky terrain, so we prioritize overall weight balance in this whole build:

– Reinforce chassis frame to improve torsional resistance

– Long-travel suspension kit to keep wheels grounded and boost climbing traction

– Heavy-duty full skid plates against rock impact and scraping

– Front and rear differential locker upgrade for slippery steep slopes

– Well-planned mounting position of recovery gear, prevent excessive rear weight and unbalanced load

Project Summary
The rig passed multiple real tests on rocky trails with stable traction and torsional performance.
This case tells us rock crawling modification focuses on chassis strength and weight balance. Simply stacking heavy parts will reduce climbing performance and raise rollover risk.
We still draw lessons on weight distribution and chassis reinforcement from this project for rock crawling custom builds.
